Family first appeared in Sweden 1657 with John Cairncross as Royal Swedish cadet in the Regiment Cronstroem (as documented in the Swedish State Archives), since 1664 als Lieutenant in Regiment Grothusen, son in law of the Royal Swedish Cavalry Captain Berend Sonnenberg (Swedish nobility since 1655), the owner of Korwenhof and Hoppenhof in Livonia. Many members of the family in Livonia bore the last name „v. Cairnkors“.
